Problem

Downloads fail in Google Chrome on a Chromebook.

Cause

The Chromebook may be unable to sign in to Google Drive. To confirm, open the Files app and select Google Drive. If it appears blank and displays Read-only, this is likely the cause.

This can result from an outdated ChromeOS version or a policy mismatch.

Solution

Try the following steps in order. Stop when the issue is resolved:

  1. Update ChromeOS to the latest version. See How to Update ChromeOS.
  2. Sync the device policies:
    • Open chrome://policy in Chrome.
    • Select Reload policies.
    • Restart the Chromebook.
  3. Powerwash the Chromebook. See How to Powerwash a Chromebook.

If the issue persists, open a ticket.
